Early reports have claimed the production budget alone was in the $250 million range, but director James Cameron isn\u2019t willing to give a hard number just yet. The only answer Cameron would give about the sequel\u2019s budget when asked by GQ magazine was the following: \u201cVery fucking [expensive].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Cameron apparently told Disney and 20th Century Studios executives that his sequel budget was so high it represented \u201cthe worst business case in movie history.\u201d According to the director\u2019s estimates, \u201cyou have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That\u2019s your threshold. That\u2019s your break even.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">On the current chart of highest-grossing movies worldwide (unadjusted for inflation), Cameron\u2019s original 2009 \u201cAvatar\u201d ranks at the top with $2.9 billion. Disney\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d is in second position with $2.7 million, while Cameron\u2019s \u201cTitanic\u201d remains in the third slot with $2.1 billion. That means, according to Cameron, that if \u201cAvatar: The Way of Water\u201d wants to break even, it\u2019ll need to overtake either \u201cStar Wars: The Force Awakens\u201d ($2.07 billion) or \u201cAvengers: Infinity War\u201d ($2.05 billion) in the fourth or fifth slots, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">Only five movies have ever crossed the $2 billion mark worldwide, unadjusted for inflation. While the pandemic has affected moviegoing, films like \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home\u201d ($1.9 billion) and \u201cTop Gun: Maverick\u201d ($1.4 billion) have managed to turn huge profits, so there\u2019s hope for \u201cThe Way of Water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \">The original \u201cAvatar\u201d grossed $785 million domestically and sits at number four on the all-time U.S. box office chart, unadjusted for inflation.
